Day 6: Together 心连心

After six days bustling activities, the AYLC officially comes to and end today.

First up, we had a final forum by Dr Yap Meen Sheng on Leadership and
Culture. Dr Yap's personal liking for animals and children shines
through his slides, engaging participants as his light-hearted keynote
address was delivered. He says that globalisation and technological
improvements are the trends of today's world, and they come along with
a series of environmental and security issues. Hence, living in an
everychanging world with a meshing and clashing of culture, it is
imparative that leaders have a vision for the future, ability to
harness technology, developing craft and cultural intelligence, an
understanding of the world etc. During the panel discussion, an
insightful question on if online gamers who are able to organise
guilds for victory are considered leaders. Dr Yap thinks this depends
on the person's values and that ability is not exactly the key, he
does not deny the possibility of that particular suggestion.

Afterwhich, the ceremony proceeded into the giving out of certificates
to participating schools and ALL which have made AYLC reality.

With the sounding of the gong, marks the official close of AYLC.
However, there were more surprises to come. Today is Indonesia's
National Day, so here's wishing all Indonesian friends HAPPY NATIONAL
DAY! Today also happens to be Yi Thong's birthday, after tireless
preparations for LCD here's wishing you happy birthday! With a cake
and well-wishes from many, participants whose birthdays fall within
the period of AYLC were welcomed onstage to join in the celebrations.
After the lights dimmed, all joined in to watch a video montage of
3AGV model, demonstrated by participants through out the convention.
This followed with a music video "Together" which we all sang with our
hearts as we waved our lightsticks to the music.

During the farewell luncheon, there were many performances from many
paticipating schools from song and dance to a guzheng solo. It was a
joyous occasion!

Together we make a difference, one voice one destiny, together we
share the AYLC dream!

Day 5: ELJ II 学习之旅 II

Soon enough, it is Day 5, the second last day of AYLC. Today, the overseas students went for their second ELJ. It was a meaningful one - they visited Kampong Glam, Chinatown, Marina Square and also toured along the Singapore River, until they arrived at Raffles Landing Point.

During the bus rides, the tour guide taught them some general knowledge and interesting facts about Singapore.

At Kampong Glam, the leaders learnt about the origin of the name, 'Kampong Glam', got to take a look at the Glam Tree, and even got a chance to take a sniff of Glam Oil, which is used for curing headaches. They have also gained exposure on Malay culture which they do not get to see back in their homeland. They've learnt about why Malays cannot take alcohol, and also how they make perfume without using any alcohol. For most of them, it was also their first time entering a mosque, and learnt about what the Malays need to do before entering the building.

Next, they headed over to Chinatown. It was the best place for souvenir shopping, with key-chains on sale at 30 for only 10SGD! It was free and easy for most students, while some listened to the tour guide's explanations. Many were impressed by the spectacularly decorated Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and also got to learn more about Chinese culture. The mainland Chinese students were also able to make comparisons between the Chinese culture practiced back in China and the Chinese culture practiced by the Chinese diaspora in Singapore.

Soon enough came the long awaited 2 hours for shopping and eating at Marina Square. Students were given a 'Tourist Privilege' package each, which includes a guide, a discount voucher for their meal ($5 for students, $10 for teachers), and also a Tourist Privilege Card which gives students a discount of 5% to 15% at participating stores. After 2 hours, some families had problems with punctuality. They displayed a lack of 2 GVs - Sense of Responsibility and Sense of Self-Discipline. As a result, time was wasted and the tour guide had to rush through the rest of the journey. After this experience, students have learnt that in a family, everyone plays a part. A missing person would delay the entire family and it would be everyone's loss. It is also important to cooperate with their family heads, especially when something has gone wrong.

The families then walked over to the Esplanade which was just across the road. They got to take beautiful photographs at the sky garden with the Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands and the Olympic flame as the background. Meanwhile, they also got to learn more about the arts and cultural scene in Singapore. The Esplanade was also said to look like durians, the eyes of a housefly, and also a microphone.

Walking along the Esplanade bay and the Esplanade Bridge, the students soon reached their next destination - The Merlion Park. Students were excited and enthusiastic about having their photographs taken at Singapore's famous icon.

The students then followed the tour guide as she led them along Singapore River to Cavenagh Bridge, which is Singapore's oldest bridge, and then to Raffles Landing Point with the famous statue of Sir Stamford Raffles. Along the way, students learnt more about Singapore's history as they passed by interesting statues, sculptures and monuments. Time flew past, and it was the end of a meaningful ELJ.

Our overseas students have benefited greatly from this ELJ. They have experienced and seen many new things, and more importantly, had fun touring around and learning together as a family. Many students displayed their Sense of Self-Motivation as they actively questioned the tour guide and the local students. It was evident that they wanted to make the best out of the time they had for their ELJ.

Day 4: AYLC RAPweb and RVHS Talentime 2010

On Day 4 of the AYLC, the leaders had RAPWeb(Reminisce/Appreciate/Ponder) sessions, which saw the group members expressing their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for their fellow groupmates. Every group created a web of emotions that connected all the group members together, signifying the bonds they had formed between them in a period of time that spanned less than four days.
After the individual group RAPWeb session, there was a family session, where the family heads of the 10 families expressed their opinions on how the groups had progressed and learnt from each other, followed by debriefing talks with the teachers. There were both feelings of disappointments and satisfaction for the groups during the teachers' talks on their progress and behaviour throughout the three days of the convention.
The end of the talks reminded the leaders again, of the declining amount of time they had with each other. The photo-taking session was met with rousing enthusiasm as the families all made full use of the remaining time they had with each other to preserve the memories of AYLC. Many of them even purchased roses for their group members and facilitators from the booth the Student Council set up.
The end of the photo-taking session marked the end of Day 4 for most of the local participants, while the international students and facilitators anticipated the annual RVHS Talentime, where RV students showcased their talents. The night was started performances of various musical instruments, including the flute, guzheng, and even the mouth. It was then followed by performances of singing groups, solo singers and the final segment, Dance, which ended the performances on a high note. While the votes were being collated, the audience was treated to a special guest performance by one of the international participants, a Chinese Dancer. The results were then announced and another day of the AYLC had come to a resounding end.

在AYLC的第4天,学生领袖们参与了RAPWeb(怀念/感激/思考)会议。
